Holy Cross Parish

2012   •   4th Year B.Arch.Sci Project

The Holy Cross Parish is a Catholic place of worship located in the newly revitalized West Don Lands near Toronto’s waterfront. The Parish engages a street condition on two faces, a courtyard condition at the rear, and opens up to a large public park on the east side. This east-oriented worship space is bathed in the daily glow of the rising sun, which reinforces the concept of heavenly light. The opaque street-facing facade shifts in and out, creating transparent perforations which indirectly reveal the worship space to the street. The glazed central crossing separates the mundane functional programming of the parish hall from the sacred spaces, and encourages passersby to enter, explore, and cross through to the public courtyard condition beyond.
