Avondale House
2013 • Personal Project
The intent of this project was to transform an existing split-level home in Toronto into a contemporary dream home, while maintaining the essence of the original building.
The core floor plates and outer walls were used as a template for designing the transformation. The existing pitched roof was replaced with a low-slope roof, allowing for an additional second floor plate to be added above the high ground floor level. A glassed-in stair opens up the transitional area between the split levels. The ground floor was opened up, providing a large common space. A master suite was designed within the added second floor area, which contains a sleeping area, a sizeable ensuite, a walk-in closet, and lounge area. A walk-up to a rooftop patio allows for relaxing views of the backyard area while maintaining owners' privacy. The incorporation of luxury materials was key to the design.
